What Appliances Does a Gas Fitter Install?

Anything in the house that burns gas, plus the pipe that feeds it:

  • Cooktops and ovens, including new positions during a kitchen renovation
  • Space heaters and wall furnaces, flue included where the model needs one
  • Bayonet points for portable heaters
  • Outdoor BBQ and patio heater connections
  • Pool and spa heaters
  • Gas storage and continuous-flow hot water, which sits with our hot water work

Every one of them ends with the full line pressure tested, not only the new joint.

How the Install Runs

A new appliance goes in over four steps:

  1. 01

    Check the supply first

We test the line from the meter before any appliance is ordered, so the quote matches what the pipe can actually deliver.

  2. 02

    Agree the figure

You see the full price up front, covering pipe, fittings and certification, and nothing starts until you approve it.

  3. 03

    Run the new line

Copper is cut, bent and clipped into place to reach the appliance, and any dated section holding the job back is replaced while we are there.

  4. 04

    Test and certify

The system is pressure tested end to end, the appliance is commissioned to the maker's spec, and the paperwork is left with you.

How Do You Know a Connection Is Tired?

A modern appliance can expose pipe that has sat hidden behind a wall for generations:

  • A flame that burns yellow or orange instead of blue
  • A heater that struggles on cold mornings when other appliances are running
  • A connector or valve visibly corroded, a sign to look for in unrenovated fibro and weatherboard cottages
  • Pipe older than today's fittings, found when an old kitchen or wall furnace comes out

If the supply line fails the test, its upgrade goes on the same quote instead of arriving as an extra later.

What Shapes the Cost of an Appliance Install

On an install the figure depends on:

  • How far the new appliance sits from the meter or the nearest gas pipe
  • Whether a worn pipe section or connector gets renewed while the wall or floor is open
  • The appliance: a bayonet needs little more than a short branch, while a flued heater needs a flue, a bracket and a longer run
  • Whether you want it fitted outside ordinary hours, which moves it onto the after-hours rate

Cottage Renovations and Dated Gas Lines

The housing sets the install

Separate houses make up 85.8 per cent of the census dwelling count here, and many are cottages dating back to the suburb's 1850s start as housing for the local engineering and copper works. Newer townhouses and paired units have since gone in beside them, so one street can hold a century-old gas run and a modern one.

Renovations open old walls

Stripping a kitchen or moving a heater in one of the old cottages can reveal gas fittings older than the room around them, and bringing that connection up to standard while the wall is stripped is the safe order of work. A new cooktop on a worn line only does half the job.

When We're Not the Right Call

An appliance with electric ignition or a powered flue fan needs its own power point, and wiring a new one belongs to a licensed electrician, which we flag while quoting so it is booked in time. If the concern is a smell rather than a new appliance, start with gas leak detection, which puts the safety steps first.

Questions Before an Install

Do you install gas cooktops in older Georgetown cottages?

Yes. Pulling out an old hob in a pre-war cottage can expose a worn connection or a length of pipe that has seen better days, and we renew that in the same visit so the new cooktop runs off sound line. The whole job is priced and agreed before we start.

Can a new gas heater run off the existing line on a pre-war block?

Only if the line can deliver enough gas, and we measure that rather than assume it. An old connection sized for a small heater may starve a modern unit of pressure, and then the pipe is upgraded as part of the same install.

Is a licensed gas fitter legally required to connect an appliance?

Yes. Hooking any gas appliance up in NSW is licensed gas fitting work, and a handyperson or a store's delivery installer cannot certify it. Each connection we make is pressure tested and signed off before we leave.

Do you fit BBQ bayonet points and outdoor heaters?

Yes. Outdoor bayonets, patio heaters and fixed BBQ connections are all routine gas fitting. The pipe run from the nearest gas line goes on the quote first, and the outdoor point is tested exactly like one inside the kitchen.
